SEAWISE BOATING EDUCATION NZ
The RYA Yachtmaster exam is the pinnacle of the most successful sail and motor cruising scheme in the world. Every year, beginners and experienced boating people take advantage of the courses within the RYA scheme to improve their practical and shorebased ability.
What is a Yachtmaster?
A Yachtmaster whether sailing or power driven is a competent skipper who has a wealth of sailing or power driven knowledge and is competent to skipper a vessel on coastal and cross-Channel passages.
As any skipper will tell you, passages which take you close to land or across shipping lanes are the most difficult, particularly if the weather is rough or the visibility is poor.
A Yachtmaster® must be able to cope with in all conditions and demanding situations.
The scheme is accredited by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency and is emulated throughout the world.

Becoming RYA Yachtmaster
RYA Yachtmaster Certificateof Competence are only obtained by independent practical examinations by a RYA Examiner. To take the RYA Yachtmaster exam you require a Marine Radio Operator's Certificate (SRC or VHF), a current First Aid Certificate and a minimum sea time of 50 days, 5 days as skipper, 2500 miles, 5 passages over 60 miles, including 2 over night and 2 as skipper. Remember, the examination is essentially a test of ability to take charge of a vessel, so your experience as skipper is most important.
At least half this mileage and skippered passages must be in tidal water. The mileage requirement is quite high and encourages candidates to sail in a variety of weather conditions to a variety of harbours and anchorages.
